MY BASEMENT KITCHEN
A half-failed attempt to make a home-cooked Korean meal. (Logan’s Circle)

A lazy Sunday called for an impromptu picnic in Logan Circle. It was such a beautiful day that it would be criminal not to take advantage of the sunshine. So a quick pack of some Korean favorites, a short walk 24 steps to the right, and plopping right in the middle of the circle equals instant picnic.

Friday night on the 27th day of August I headed over to Subterranean A for a “House Party” with Ben Kaplan. There were 3 bands playing that night, including Tennis. I personally have never heard of Tennis, but one gentlemen told me that I should buy their LP before heading out the door because it would be worth a lot of money one day.
The little I can tell you about this place is that it is indeed a house (or apartment, or basement) and there are two guys who live there. We did meet one of the guys, Sami, who works for NPR as a music journalist. They recently took on the endeavor of hosting shows at their house, known as Subterranean A. I believe this is their 4th or 5th show and it was pretty successful. The space is great besides the fact that it did turn into a sauna. But who doesn’t love a good sweaty time with live music.
Some of my favorite things about this little “underground” shindig:
01 the DC flag painted on the wall.
02 the random works of art hanging on the walls
03 the no smoking and no eating sign placed in the kitchen next to the keg.
04 the eclectic mix of people who showed up.
05 the bouncer who checked id’s…. illegitimately legit.
06 the fact that everyone was sweating.
07 and that nobody was overtly an asshole.

The past weekend when I was in Philly, we went for brunch at Hawthornes Beer Boutique & Gourmet Eatery. While everyone else was impressed by the selection of over 1,000 beers, I found more interest in this anomaly of a dish called “French Toast.”
Hawthornes’ House Baked French Toast
“Another Hawthornes original sure to warm the belly. This crowd pleaser is not your typical French toast. No syrup required, but included ☺”
How could anyone resist a smiley face, the minimalist description of the french toast also was intriguing. The bottom line was that it was just good and nothing like it existed.

01 We walked night & day.

02 We fit eight legs in the back.

03 We lived in a house in this alley.

04 We were tourists.

05 We found treasures.

06 We ate at Jim’s.

07 We love Philadelphia.
This past weekend I made a trip out to Philadelphia to round out my summer tour. June it was Pittsburgh, July it was New York, and this month it was time to for Philly. I must say thanks to Lesley Hartman for hosting a wonderful weekend in the city. And thank you to Jillian Haney for accompanying me. Thank you Nick Camacho for introducing “Hot Boyz” into the weekend. Lastly but not leastly, special shout out to Daphne and Stevie for being great roommates in that house in that alley. They fed us pizza, offered up there beds, and let us pee in their toilet.
And now by the sounds of it I have made this blog post an “acceptance of your presentation” of some kind of award. Again I say….Thank You, Thank You!

I have been keeping busy at my full time job at THE GENERAL DESIGN COMPANY. A lot of exciting things to come and hopefully sooner than later I can share all the goodies. Lookie there I even have an official business card, so lets do business together.
Work isn’t the only thing that has been going on. While I have not been blogging, I have been collecting things to blog about. So get ready because you are about to be hit in the face with some serious Everyday blogging (at least for a few days).

BEACH FOSSILS

On the day of 8/8 at 8pm…I ventured to the Black Cat to see Here We Go Magic and Beach Fossils. Two bands who have been in some heavy rotation in my iTunes throughout the summer and it was great to here the music live. The bands definitely did not disappoint for a good Sunday night out alone.
Both bands are from Brooklyn and with most of my friends now residing in that hipster of a city…it gives me all the more temptation and reason to make another move in the future? Because of course if and when I move to Brooklyn, I am going on a date with the Beach Fossils crew including TJ, the trickster of a band mate. The fact that they have no idea, is only one of the minor details.

I blame my absence on the week I went away back to Washington State for a Wedding Week for my friends, Rachel de la Llana & Rex Yabut. You may remember their invites that I designed for them in an earlier post. What a week!
And as you can see the bridal party had some fun in the photo booth.

Have to give props to Lesley Hartman for messaging me this video with the comment “you like the word fuck.”

Yeah, sure you may have been to an outdoor film festival, but have you been to one with the Capitol adjacent to the screen and the Washington Monument at your back?
Screen on the Green is an annual free movie festival on the National Mall in Washington DC and of course I had to support it, especially with Scott Livingston (one of my bosses) being on the committee. The festival almost didn’t happen, but luckily the hard working Washingtonians Saved Screen on the Green (again)!
Here is the Schedule:
July 12 – “Goldfinger”
July 19 – “The Goodbye Girl”
July 26 – “12 Angry Men”
August 2 – “Bonnie and Clyde”
After setting the destination and passing a robot on the way to the first showing, a Looney Tunes short started off the night….Then after an hour into Goldfinger, it started to downpour and lightning struck, so the movie ended early as everyone ran for cover. A nice rainy bike ride home, resulted in water filled shoes and a lovely adventure to share. Mission averted.

Remember Alice from Brady Bunch, well this site is named after her and I find it to be a brilliant idea. Ever since I moved into the city, I find it particularly difficult to get household items for a decent price without lugging a 24 pack of toilet paper on my bike.
Alice.com is where you can get everything you need including: cleaning supplies, deodorant, condoms, and stamps. As long as you put 6 things in your cart you are ready to go to take advantage of free shipping. I put my first order in today, who knew shopping for the things you always forget could be so exciting. Plus it arrives with 2-3 business days from the order date.
Everything really is on the internet.
Listening to Micah Panama’s mixtape in the new session from The Mixtape Club. A majority of these songs have already been in heavy rotation in my iTunes. But this is a perfect summer mix.
Tonight I went to an opening of a photography exhibit called “Exquisite Corpse” at the Civilian Art Projects in DC. To give you a little idea of what the exhibit is about, I have stolen the words straight from their site:
Invented by Surrealists in 1925, the Exquisite Corpse method involves a group of collaborators — in this case, 28 photographers — assembling a collection of words or images; each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person has contributed.
There are three different sets of photographs in the 28 and seeing how each photo relates to or juxtaposes the next one, makes you really think about how people relate or respond to images and ideas. It also made me want to participate in the sequence of images.
For those of you not in DC to see the exhibit face to face, you can see the photos on the website, (just click the image above).

01 Everyday – Vetiver
02 Everyday Feels Like Sunday – Of Montreal
03 Everyday Struggle – Notorious B.I.G
04 Everyday’s Forecast – Gym Class Heroes
05 New Image Everyday – Teengirl Fantasy
06 Everyday Should Be a Holiday – The Dandy Warhols
07 Someday is Everyday – Pretty Lights

Being new to DC, I decided to go explore what is called a “gem in our nation’s capital” ….making my first visit to Rock Creek Park, one of the largest urban parks in the states. I rode my bike along the Rock Creek trail and at one point shared the trail with a deer for all of 10 seconds. Really wasn’t sure where I was going and just kept riding down the trail soon ending up at the Potomac River. The whole trail actually follows Rock Creek to the river, making it a really great retreat away from the city within the city.
To give you some numbers on the park…
01. Established in 1890
02. There are 30 picnic areas
03. 25 Tennis Courts
04. Over 25 miles on Rock Creek Trails
05. 13 miles of bridle trails
06. The main section of the park is 1,754 acres
07. That makes Rock Creek Park more than twice the size of Central Park in NYC

I had the pleasure to see Neon Indian on Saturday 6/12 at the Brillobox
while in Pittsburgh. Nobody at the show could resist the urge to dance and dance…eventually reaching a point where wiping your sweat with your even more sweaty arm was pointless and you just embraced the drip. You should be jealous because on top of that we got to enjoy Deadbeat Summer twice in the best way.
Now, if you are asking who is Neon Indian and haven’t heard the album Psychic Chasms yet, you’ve been missing out on what everyone is calling the beats of the summer. But this album is definitely not just something to enjoy for the summer…keeping this one for many days to come.

I spent this past weekend visiting my good friend Lauren in Pittsburgh and these pictures document just a few of the places we went and things we saw.
01. The first stop after my five hour drive: Over the Bar Bicycle Cafe
02. The best Thai Restaurant ever with a great outdoor space: Pusadee’s Garden
03. Stairs that lead to nowhere.
04. Gas-mask Lady sticker seen in multiple places.
05. A dumpster landmark.
06. Pittsburgh likes its dinosaurs.
07. On my last day we ventured downtown to the Three Rivers Arts Fest

As EVERYDAY’s official contributor and Kaleena’s official girlfriend, a post from me is far overdue. I’m Jillian—a graphic designer that loves shopping and hates being hot in New York City. A few weekends ago when the temperature was still floating in the lovely 50′s, I ventured out to the Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side with good friend and EVERYDAY Daily Designer Maddie Owens. The fair is small in size but packed with amazing vendors. We hit up Luke’s Lobster stand for lunch, Macaron Parlour’s stand for dessert, and Erica Weiner’s jewelry table for a little retail therapy. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this fair; it’s going on every weekend until December! And make sure to pick up some bacon macaroons—go early though, because I usually buy them out.
Can you believe its June already. Summer is official.
Lets celebrate no Monday with music as The Mixtape Club brings you ten more mixtapes.
